To be educationally qualified for Board certification requires:
• Certification as a dentist, including undergraduate university education and completion of dental school.
• Certification as a periodontist after at least 3 years of a residency program approved by the American Dental Association.
In addition to the educational requirements, Board certification requires:
• Comprehensive oral and written examinations covering all phases of periodontal disease and its treatment, including dental implants.
• Recertification of continued competency in periodontics through testing and continuing education.
In short, having a Diplomate as a periodontist ensures that you are seeing a professional who has taken the time and effort to prove, before a panel of internationally respected peers, that he or she is competent enough to hold the specialties highest status.
Dr. Elly Tehrani is board certified periodontist in both Canada and the US; a distinction that only a few periodontists hold/a distinction that less than 2% of periodontists have.
